Nigerian Pharmaceutical Distribution Glossary

NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control)

The Nigerian federal regulator responsible for registering, regulating, and controlling the manufacture, importation, exportation, advertisement, distribution, sale and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, detergents and packaged water in Nigeria.

Every legitimate pharmaceutical product sold in Nigeria must carry a valid NAFDAC registration number on its packaging. Distributing unregistered or counterfeit products is a criminal offence in Nigeria.

PCN (Pharmacists Council of Nigeria)

The Nigerian regulatory body that registers and licenses pharmacists and pharmaceutical premises in Nigeria. PCN sets the standards for pharmacy practice and inspects premises for compliance.

A PCN-licensed premises with a registered superintendent pharmacist is required to dispense prescription-only medicines (antibiotics, antimalarials, etc.). PCN also issues Patent Medicine Vendor (PMV) licences for limited OTC sales.

PSN (Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria)

The professional body representing registered pharmacists in Nigeria. PSN advocates for pharmacy practice, organises continuing-education programmes, and engages government on pharmacy policy.

CAC (Corporate Affairs Commission)

The Nigerian federal body responsible for registering businesses (Business Names) and incorporating limited liability companies. CAC registration is mandatory for any legitimate pharmaceutical distributor in Nigeria.

Manufacturers (including Dizpharm) will not invoice or supply an unregistered individual. A CAC certificate is also required to open a corporate bank account in your business name.

SON (Standards Organisation of Nigeria)

The Nigerian federal body responsible for setting and enforcing product standards across all industries, including the Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) for packaged drinking water.

FMOH (Federal Ministry of Health)

The Nigerian federal ministry responsible for national health policy, supervision of public health agencies (including NAFDAC and PCN), and management of federal hospitals.

GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice)

An internationally recognised set of standards covering the manufacturing environment, processes, personnel, documentation and quality control required to produce safe and consistent pharmaceutical products.

Dizpharm operates under GMP standards at its NAFDAC-certified facility in Ibusa, Delta State. GMP compliance is verified by NAFDAC inspections.

BP (British Pharmacopoeia)

The official compendium of standards for medicinal substances used in the United Kingdom and widely adopted across Commonwealth countries (including Nigeria). When a product is labelled "BP", the active ingredient meets the identity, purity and assay standards defined in the British Pharmacopoeia.

Dizpharm products are formulated to BP standard — e.g. Paracetamol BP, Metronidazole BP, Ibuprofen BP.

NAFDAC Greenbook

The official register published by NAFDAC listing all NAFDAC-registered pharmaceutical products approved for sale in Nigeria. The Greenbook lists each product's brand name, generic name, manufacturer, and registration number.

Distributors should cross-check products against the Greenbook before stocking to confirm the registration number is valid and matches the manufacturer printed on the pack.

MAS (Mobile Authentication Service)

A NAFDAC-supported per-pack verification system in which a unique scratch-off PIN on the product packaging is sent by SMS to a designated short code, returning an instant pass/fail authentication response.

Where MAS is implemented for a particular SKU, every individual pack can be authenticated against the manufacturer's database — an additional safeguard against counterfeits.

NIS standard (Nigerian Industrial Standard)

A set of mandatory product standards established by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON). Packaged drinking water — including sachet ("pure") and bottled water — must comply with NIS standards for microbiological, chemical and physical quality.

MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)

The smallest order a manufacturer will accept from a distributor. For Dizpharm, MOQ is one full carton per SKU, with mixed-SKU first orders accepted to lower the entry barrier for new partners.

PPMV (Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendor)

A licensed retailer permitted to sell a limited range of over-the-counter medicines in Nigeria, typically in rural and semi-urban areas where formal pharmacies are scarce. PPMVs are licensed by the PCN.

PPMVs collectively form the largest pharmaceutical retail channel in Nigeria by outlet count. They are core customers for fast-moving SKUs like paracetamol, metronidazole and B-complex.

Wholesale chemist

A PCN-licensed wholesale pharmacy that supplies retail pharmacies, clinics and hospitals. Wholesale chemists typically operate larger premises, hold broader inventory, and frequently extend credit to retail customers.

Trade margin

The percentage difference between a distributor's landed cost (manufacturer price plus freight) and the price at which the distributor sells to the next link in the chain (pharmacy, PPMV, end consumer). Trade margins typically increase as monthly offtake grows under tiered distributor pricing.

Carton (pharma)

The standard wholesale unit in Nigerian pharmaceutical distribution. A typical tablet carton contains 100 blister strips of 10 tablets each (1,000 tablets per carton). Suspension and syrup cartons vary by SKU.

Carton MOQ is the entry point for most distributor relationships. Dizpharm accepts one-carton MOQ per SKU and mixed-SKU first orders.

Authorised distributor

A distributor formally appointed by a manufacturer to supply its products in a defined territory. Authorised distributors typically receive: tiered trade pricing, direct sales-rep contact, marketing support, and (at higher volume tiers) exclusive territory rights.

Exclusive territory

A geographic area (typically a state, LGA, or named drug market) within which a manufacturer commits not to appoint another distributor. Exclusive territory rights protect the distributor's customer base and margin.

Dizpharm offers exclusive territory rights to distributors who consistently meet agreed monthly offtake targets.

OTC (Over the Counter)

A pharmaceutical product that can be legally sold without a prescription. Examples in the Dizpharm range include Paracetamol, Dizprofen (Ibuprofen), Folic Acid and the Chrismatel water range.

POM (Prescription Only Medicine)

A pharmaceutical product that may only be dispensed against a valid prescription from a registered medical or dental practitioner. Dispensing requires a PCN-licensed pharmacy premises with a superintendent pharmacist.

POM categories in the Dizpharm range include the antibiotics Caregyl (Metronidazole), Caretrim (Co-trimoxazole) and Ciprodiz (Ciprofloxacin).

Generic drug

A pharmaceutical product that contains the same active ingredient, in the same strength and dosage form, as a branded originator drug, but is marketed under its own brand or under the international non-proprietary name. Generics are typically priced significantly below the originator.

Dizpharm Paracetamol is a generic alternative to Panadol; Caregyl to Flagyl; Dizprofen to Brufen; Caretrim to Septrin/Bactrim. All are NAFDAC-certified and produced to BP standard.

Sachet water (pure water)

Packaged drinking water sold in heat-sealed 50cl polythene sachets — the dominant individual-portion water format in Nigeria. Sachet water must be NAFDAC-registered and comply with NIS standards for packaged drinking water.

Chrismatel Sachet Water (NAFDAC Reg. No. 01-5406) is produced at the Dizpharm Ibusa facility.

Analgesic

A class of medication used to relieve pain. Includes simple analgesics (paracetamol), non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen (NSAIDs), and opioids. Most analgesics sold in Nigerian retail are OTC simple analgesics and NSAIDs.

NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug)

A class of analgesic that reduces pain, fever and inflammation by inhibiting cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes. Ibuprofen, diclofenac and aspirin are common NSAIDs.

Dizprofen (Ibuprofen 200mg / 400mg / 100mg per 5ml suspension) is the Dizpharm NSAID line.

Antibiotic

A medication that treats bacterial infections, either by killing bacteria (bactericidal) or by inhibiting their reproduction (bacteriostatic). Antibiotics are prescription-only in Nigeria and require a PCN-licensed dispensing premises.

The Dizpharm antibiotic range includes Caregyl (Metronidazole — anaerobic / antiprotozoal), Caretrim (Co-trimoxazole — sulfonamide combination) and Ciprodiz (Ciprofloxacin — fluoroquinolone).

Ogbo-Ogwu Market

The largest pharmaceutical wholesale market in West Africa, located in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria. Ogbo-Ogwu hosts hundreds of wholesale traders supplying pharmacies and PPMVs across the South-East and beyond.

A major pharmaceutical wholesale corridor on Lagos Island, Nigeria. Idumota (alongside the Ojuelegba mainland market) forms the largest formal pharmaceutical distribution hub in Lagos State.

Eziukwu / Ariaria

The principal pharmaceutical wholesale market in Aba, Abia State, serving the South-East and parts of the South-South. Eziukwu (sometimes referenced together with Ariaria International Market) is a key destination on Dizpharm's dispatch routes.

Sabon Gari Market

A major pharmaceutical and consumer-goods wholesale market in Kano, northern Nigeria. Sabon Gari is the principal entry point for pharmaceutical supply into Kano, Kaduna and the wider northern region.
