OTC (Over the Counter)
A pharmaceutical product that can be legally sold without a prescription. Examples in the Dizpharm range include Paracetamol, Dizprofen (Ibuprofen), Folic Acid and the Chrismatel water range.
POM (Prescription Only Medicine)
A pharmaceutical product that may only be dispensed against a valid prescription from a registered medical or dental practitioner. Dispensing requires a PCN-licensed pharmacy premises with a superintendent pharmacist.
POM categories in the Dizpharm range include the antibiotics Caregyl (Metronidazole), Caretrim (Co-trimoxazole) and Ciprodiz (Ciprofloxacin).
Generic drug
A pharmaceutical product that contains the same active ingredient, in the same strength and dosage form, as a branded originator drug, but is marketed under its own brand or under the international non-proprietary name. Generics are typically priced significantly below the originator.
Dizpharm Paracetamol is a generic alternative to Panadol; Caregyl to Flagyl; Dizprofen to Brufen; Caretrim to Septrin/Bactrim. All are NAFDAC-certified and produced to BP standard.
Sachet water (pure water)
Packaged drinking water sold in heat-sealed 50cl polythene sachets — the dominant individual-portion water format in Nigeria. Sachet water must be NAFDAC-registered and comply with NIS standards for packaged drinking water.
Chrismatel Sachet Water (NAFDAC Reg. No. 01-5406) is produced at the Dizpharm Ibusa facility.
Analgesic
A class of medication used to relieve pain. Includes simple analgesics (paracetamol), non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen (NSAIDs), and opioids. Most analgesics sold in Nigerian retail are OTC simple analgesics and NSAIDs.
NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug)
A class of analgesic that reduces pain, fever and inflammation by inhibiting cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes. Ibuprofen, diclofenac and aspirin are common NSAIDs.
Dizprofen (Ibuprofen 200mg / 400mg / 100mg per 5ml suspension) is the Dizpharm NSAID line.
Antibiotic
A medication that treats bacterial infections, either by killing bacteria (bactericidal) or by inhibiting their reproduction (bacteriostatic). Antibiotics are prescription-only in Nigeria and require a PCN-licensed dispensing premises.
The Dizpharm antibiotic range includes Caregyl (Metronidazole — anaerobic / antiprotozoal), Caretrim (Co-trimoxazole — sulfonamide combination) and Ciprodiz (Ciprofloxacin — fluoroquinolone).
